CINCINNATI - The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its latest Graduation Success Rate data today with the University of Cincinnati athletic department once again exceeding the national average. According to the data, Bearcats student-athletes are graduating at an 86 percent rate, up four percentage points from last year's release.

"We are excited to see the upward trajectory that our teams and student-athletes continue to demonstrate in their commitment to academics and graduation at the University of Cincinnati," Dr. Joe Luckey, Senior Associate AD for Student-Athlete Support Services, said. "Our coaches have done a tremendous job recruiting students who walk into a culture where graduation is an expectation, not just a goal."

The data released Wednesday is based upon a six-year cohort and includes only student-athletes who received athletic scholarships, enrolled at Cincinnati as freshmen or incoming transfers from 2007-10, and completed their degree within six years. Based upon that data, 14 of the Bearcats' 15 programs hold GSR's of 74 percent or higher, including eight programs with a GSR over 85 percent. Included in that grouping are four programs that graduated 100 percent of its student-athletes, including lacrosse, tennis and volleyball on the women's side and men's golf.

Historically, the first release of data followed the completion of the 2004-05 academic year with the UC athletic department carrying a 66 percent rate of graduation by its student-athletes. In the 13 years since then, the Bearcats have shot up 20 percentage points with an increase of seven percentage points in total over the past two release. In fact, this year's four percent increase ties for the biggest annual jump for UC, equaling the increases achieved in the 2007-08 (1998-01 cohort) and 2008-09 (1999-02 cohort) when the Bearcats rose from 66 to 70 and then 70 up to 74. After increasing three more points in the 2009-10 release, the Bearcats have not below 77 percent since.
