// THE SERIES
The two teams have squared off only once prior, a 69-48 Bearcats loss to The Rock on a neutral floor on Dec. 2, 1978.
// LAST TIME OUT
UC (0-1) was unable to recover from a 13-point second-half deficit Friday night, dropping an 87-77 decision to the ETSU Buccaneers inside Brooks Gym.
In the regular-season opener for both teams, the two squads traded 13-point advantages with UC holding a sizeable lead early in the second quarter while ETSU surged out of halftime with a large advantage late in the third. The Bearcats cut their deficit to just three points with 2:39 left in the game, but a 13-6 Buccaneer run over the duration of the contest put the Red & Black away, 87-77.
UC featured four double-figure scorers led by senior forward Shanice Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara/Monroe CC) and freshman forward Iimar'I Thomas (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) each scoring 19 points, while senior guard Ana Owens (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) added 13 and junior guard Nikira Goings (Marietta, Ga./Osborne) tallied 11. Johnson and Thomas each also grabbed eight rebounds.
// SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
The Red & Black unofficially began the 2017-18 season with a lopsided, 77-35, exhibition victory over the Findlay Oilers on Nov. 2 at Cincinnati State. The Bearcats were in control from the jump with a 9-0 run to start the game and a 40-16 halftime lead. UC stayed in command in the second half, increasing its lead to 30 points in the third quarter and a game-high 42 points before the final horn. The Bearcats had three double-figure scorers on the night, paced by Goings' 16 points including 4-of-4 from three-point range.
With their best record since 2005-06, the Bearcats are riding the momentum of a successful 2016-17 campaign into this season. Touting a 16-14 overall mark and its highest-ever -- tie for fifth place -- finish in the American Athletic Conference standings, UC enters 2017-18 with its top two scorers -- Shanice Johnson: 15.2 ppg, Ana Owens: 12.1 ppg -- and rebounders -- Shanice Johnson: 9.7 rpg, Chelsea Warren: 4.4 rpg -- returning.
Highlighted among the Red & Black's eight returning letterwinners are seniors Johnson and Owens. Johnson was a unanimous pick as The American Newcomer of the Year in 2017 as well as a third team all-conference selection, while Owens continues her climb up the Bearcats' all-time scoring list with 1,118 career points -- good for 18th place.
The Bearcats welcome five newcomers this season including Virginia Tech transfer Genesis Parker (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson/Virginia Tech) and four highly-regarded freshmen -- Michaela Porter (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy of International Studies), Brianna Livingston (Scarborough, Ontario/Wilfred Laurier), Andeija Puckett (Griffin, Ga./Griffin), and Thomas. As a mid-year transfer, Parker will not be eligible to compete until after UC's fall academic semester is complete in mid-December.
// SCOUTING THE ROCK
Slippery Rock (0-2) enters Monday's contest reeling following two-consecutive losses to begin the season. Most recently, The Rock dropped a 78-72 decision to Lincoln University on Saturday at the 2017 PSAC-CIAA Challenge in Ettrick, Virginia. Sophomore guard Brooke Hinderliter led Slippery Rock with 18 points and eight rebounds. So far this year, redshirt junior guard Ciara Patterson is pacing the team with 14.5 points per game, while Hinderliter and senior forward Mallory Heinle post 11.0 and 10.5 points a contest, respectively. In the preseason, The Rock was picked to finish sixth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division by the league's coaches. Slippery Rock returns six contributors from a team that went 9-19 overall last season. Head coach Bobby McGraw enters his fourth season in charge at SRU and has already guided SRU to 33 wins and one PSAC Tournament berth in only 83 games.
