CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati women's basketball topped the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, 64-53, on Saturday afternoon at Saint Ursula Academy Gymnasium & Convocation Center.

With the win, the Bearcats improved to 4-2 overall on the young season and 4-1 at home. Meanwhile, the Colonels fell to 2-3 in 2017. UC has now come away victorious in each of the last six matchups with EKU.

After a deadlocked first quarter, 13-13, the Red & Black dominated the second with a 16-0 run from the 9:28 to 3:00 marks of the period and took a 34-18 advantage into halftime. Leading by a game-high 18 points early in the third quarter, the Bearcats saw the Colonels reduce their deficit to as little as six points with a minute to go in the period. Back-to-back baskets from UC to end the third allowed it to bring a 49-39 lead into the final quarter. EKU again cut its deficit to six points early in the fourth period, but the Red & Black answered with an 11-3 burst from the 9:16 to 2:43 marks of the quarter to take command of the game late. Solid play down the stretch allowed the Bearcats to pull away with a 64-53 win.

Senior forward Shanice Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara/Monroe CC) paced a trio of UC double-figure scorers with 15 points, as well as a season-high six assists. Freshman forward Iimar'I Thomas (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) followed with 14 points, and five rebounds, while senior guard Ana Owens (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) chipped in 11 points. EKU's Bria Bass scored a game-best 22 points, while Shay Solomon posted a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Bearcats shot the ball at a 47-percent clip from the field for the game including six made 3-pointers. UC also converted 13 Colonel turnovers into 19 points and held a 23-0 edge in bench points. The Red & Black were outrebounded 35-28, but held EKU to 40-percent shooting from the floor and 32-percent from behind the 3-point arc.
