CINCINNATI
– University of Cincinnati men's soccer dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the UCF Knights on Senior Night Saturday at Gettler Stadium.

With the loss, the Bearcats ended the 2017 season at 7-9-1 overall and 0-7-0 in the tough American Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, UCF clinched a spot in the 2017 AAC Championship and improved to 7-5-2 on the year and 4-2-1 in the league.

The Red & Black answered an early Knights score with a redshirt sophomore Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) goal in the 12th minute to tie the match. The two teams competed through the remainder of the first half and the entirety of the second to force an overtime period. UCF wasted little time in overtime with a strike and score in the 94th minute to end UC's season.

After an evenly-played first half, the Red & Black was knocking on the door of the game-winning score late in the second with a few opportunities from both Smythe and freshman midfielder Sean Clarke (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) sailing wide of the net. Armed with the momentum from a strong closing minutes of regulation, the Red & Black lost mark of a UCF forward in the box midway through extra time which proved to be the difference.

Smythe's score was his fifth of the season and the assist on the play by junior Peyton Mowery (Troy, Ohio/Troy) was the defender's first helper of the year. In his first match back in three weeks, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) was solid between the pipes with four saves. Seniors Jack Clark (Mason, Ohio/Mason) and Christian Hay (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) did well in limiting the Knights offense and helping create scoring chances for the Bearcats on Senior Night.
