CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team staged a fourth-quarter comeback that came up just short in a 53-50 loss to Xavier in the 40th Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout, Sunday at Cintas Center.
The Bearcats (6-4) had a 7-0 run over 90 seconds which pulled them to within 51-50 with 1:17 remaining. Xavier's Princess Stewart hit a running layup with 14 seconds left to put the Musketeers up 53-50 and senior guard Ana Owens' (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) game-tying attempt with 2.4 seconds left came up short, snapping UC's two-game winning streak.
Xavier (5-3) has won four-straight games over the Bearcats.
UC's late run was keyed by a three-pointer and layup by Owens and a give-and-go layup from sophomore guard Antoinette Miller (Detroit, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup) to sophomore forward Angel Rizor (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake).
Rizor's 15 points and career-best 12 rebounds led all players, her first-career double-double.
Owens and junior guard Nikira Goings (Marietta, Ga./Osborne) both finished with nine points, with Goings adding seven rebounds. Senior forward Shanice Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara/Monroe CC) had eight boards while Miller had seven points, three assists, and a pair of rebounds.
UC trailed most of the way, but knotted things up at 41-41 after four-straight points to start the fourth quarter. Xavier knocked down a pair of threes to move back out to a 49-41 lead which set up the furious final minutes.
The Bearcats struggled from the field, going 18-of-57 (.320) from the field and 2-of-16 (.130) from beyond the 3-point arc. The defensive effort was strong, holding Xavier to a 38-percent effort from the floor (21-for-55) and forcing 13 turnovers. UC held a 40-34 edge on the boards, but XU's 10 3-pointers helped propel the Musketeers to the win.
Xavier led 28-21 at the break after hitting six three pointers in the opening half. UC struggled from the field, shooting at a 21-percent clip, but a 9-for-9 effort from the charity stripe kept UC within striking distance at the break.
