CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati junior swingman Jacob Evans III (Baton Rouge, La./St. Michael the Archangel) was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday.
Evans averaged a team-high 16.0 points with 5.0 rebounds while shooting 46.4 percent (13 of 28) from the floor with eight assists and only two turnovers in a pair of Bearcats' wins last week.
Evans hit a 19-foot jumper with 0.4 seconds left to lifted Cincinnati to a come-from-behind 55-53 win at Temple (Jan. 4). He finished with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals against the Owls.
Three days later, Evans matched teammate Gary Clark for game-high scoring honors against SMU (Jan. 7), pouring in 18 points with a trio of three-pointers to go with four assists and no turnovers in 36 minutes in UC's 76-56 home victory over the Mustangs.
A watch list member for the Wooden Award and Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, Evans is averaging a team-best 13.8 points, shooting 48.5 percent (79 of 163) from the field and 40.5 percent (30 of 74) from three-point range with 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists this season.
The versatile Evans ranks among The American's leaders in eight categories: assist-to-turnover ratio (seventh at 1.7), three-point shooting percentage (eighth at .405), blocks (10th at 1.2), three-pointers made (11th at 1.9 per game), assists (12th at 3.4), points (13th with 13.8), steals (15th with 1.3) and minutes played (22nd with 30.4).
Since the start of league play, Evans ranks third in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.5-to-1 [14 assists with four turnovers]) and eighth in scoring (14.7 points) among conference players.
This marks the second player of the week award for Evans this season. Evans also earned the honor on Dec. 18 after helping the Bearcats to wins over Mississippi State (24 points on 7-of-13 shooting with four three-pointers and three blocks) and at UCLA (16 points on 5-of-11 shooting with four threes). Earlier in his career he earned weekly honor roll selection (11/14/16) and two rookie of the week honors (12/28/15 and 2/29/16).
Evans has scored in double figures in 45 of the last 53 games for the Bearcats and needs 14 points to become the 52nd member of Cincinnati's 1,000-point club.
