HOUSTON – University of Cincinnati women's basketball topped the Houston Cougars, 88-82, on Wednesday night at H&PE Arena behind a season-high 27 points from senior guard Ana Owens.
With the win, UC snapped its two-game losing streak and improved to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in American Athletic Conference play. Meanwhile, UH's six-game win streak was halted as it dropped to 14-4 on the season and 3-1 in AAC action.
In already its third road AAC game of the young conference season, the Bearcats fell behind 4-0 but roared back to take a 24-18 advantage into the second quarter. The Red & Black increased its lead to as many as eight points in the second period but saw the Cougars end the half with a 17-10 run to bring the score to 41-40, UC, at the break.
With the score knotted at 48 with six minutes to go in the third quarter, the Bearcats ended the period with a 21-12 run to lead 69-60 heading into the fourth. After the Red & Black took a game-high 10-point advantage early in the final quarter, the Cougars answered with a 9-2 run with six minutes remaining. UC dug in down the stretch, though, outscoring the home team 16-13 to come away victorious, 88-82.
Owens (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) led the way with a season-high 27 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Sophomore forward Angel Rizor (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) pitched in a career-best 18 points as well as eight rebounds. In addition, sophomore guard Sam Rodgers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East) and freshman forward IImar'I Thomas (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) each added 11 points in the win.
UC was efficient from the field with 53-percent shooting and knocked down 18 free throws. The Bearcats' bench contributed greatly with 26 points. The Bearcats turned nine offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points. Furthermore, the Red & Black scored 38 points in the paint and dished out 17 assists.
