PALM BAY, Fla. – University of Cincinnati women's golf defeated the FIU Panthers, 4.5–0.5, in match play on Monday at Majors Golf Course.
Competing for the first time since the end of October, the Bearcats were impressive against a solid FIU squad. With a scoring team and a B team competing, both found successes against the opposition.
Playing in the No. 1 spot on UC's scoring team, senior Christina Gloor (Mattstetten, Switzerland/ESC La Neuveville) split a point with the Panthers' Carolina Andrade. Junior Anika Hitt (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) and junior Elizabeth Keeling (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) – competing in the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively – both went 1 up against FIU's Agueda Cortilla and Hannah Leiner head to head. The Red & Black's top five rounded out with sophomore Alyssa Burritt (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) beating Diana Velez, 6&5, and freshman Amalia Shahzan (Kedah, Malaysia) prevailing against Valentina Gilly, 4&3, to complete UC's 4.5-0.5 win.
The Bearcats B team also put on a performance with a 3.5-1.5 win versus their Panthers counterparts. Freshman Angela Lopez (Bogotá, Colombia) went 2 up against Carolina Rotzinger, while sophomore Daniela Murcia (Bogotá, Colombia) took down Katerina Krasova, 2&1. Junior Emma Wachtel (Rorschwihr, France/Jean Sturm Gymnasium) completed UC's dominance with a 2 up triumph over Ana Maria Rengifo.
// COACH CARL ON THE BEARCATS
"I am really proud of the girls for sticking with their processes, not just focusing on the outcomes," said head coach Janet Carl. "It helped us maintain our focus throughout all 18 holes during very tough conditions. The wind played havoc with most of the girls at some point during the day, but they fought through. I was really pleased with the effort that they made. It was a successful outing and we are looking forward to the next event."
