DALLAS – University of Cincinnati women's basketball made it four straight on Wednesday when it took care of business on the road at SMU with a 58-40 win.
With the victory, UC improved to 13-7 on the season and 5-2 in American Athletic Conference play. Meanwhile, SMU dropped to 7-13 overall and 1-6 in the AAC.
Riding the momentum of three-consecutive wins, UC jumped ahead early with an 8-0 run in the first quarter, resulting in a 19-11 advantage heading into the second period. Both teams struggled to score in the following quarter, but the Bearcats edged the Mustangs, 9-8, to take a 27-20 lead into halftime. Out of the break, the Red & Black increased its lead to as many as 11 points midway through the third quarter and continued with a 13-point surplus late. In the driver's seat to begin the final period, the Bearcats put the game away with an 11-0 run early in the fourth as they cruised to a 58-40 victory.
For the eighth time this season senior guard Ana Owens (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) led the way with a game-high 14 points, to go along with five rebounds and four assists. The production continued with sophomore guard Antoinette Miller (Detroit, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup) scoring 10 points off of the bench. Sophomore forward Angel Rizor (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) stuffed the stat sheet with 10 rebounds, eight points, three assists, three blocks, and one steal. In addition, sophomore guard Sam Rodgers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East) scored nine points, while senior forward Shanice Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara/Monroe CC) did a little bit of everything with eight rebounds, seven points, four assists, and two blocks.
UC suffocated SMU into 23-percent shooting from the field for the game. The Bearcats also dominated on the boards, 51-39, and scored 18 fast-break points. Furthermore, the Red & Black got 14 points from its bench and knocked down nine 3-pointers.
