Wednesday's matchup against the American Athletic Conference newcomer will mark just the second all-time meeting between the two teams. In the only previous tilt, the Bearcats knocked off the Shockers, 76-58, on Dec. 9, 1983 on a neutral floor in the Illinois Classic in Champaign, Illinois.
 
// LAST TIME OUT
UC (13-10, 5-5 AAC) suffered a 106-65 defeat to the top-ranked UConn Huskies on Sunday afternoon inside the XL Center.
 
Looking to snap a two-game losing skid, UC started fast, drilling a pair of 3-pointers and taking a two-point lead, 11-9, with 5:47 left in the opening quarter. UConn responded with a 21-0 run over four minutes and took a 32-13 advantage into the second quarter. After the home team went ahead by a first-half high 28 points midway through the following period, the Bearcats answered with an 8-0 burst to pull closer. Junior forward Nikira Goings (Marietta, Ga./Osborne) then splashed home a near-half-court heave at the buzzer to bring the score to 52-30, UConn, going into halftime.
 
Armed a hint of momentum out of the break, UC fell victim to a 19-6 Huskies streak over the opening 5:30 of the third quarter as UConn took control of the game. In total, the Red & Black was outscored 34-12 in the period. With the home team increasing its lead throughout the fourth quarter, sophomore guard Antoinette Miller (Detroit, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup) drilled five 3's help close the gap. In the end, UConn showed why it is the nation's top team with a 106-65 victory.
 
Miller paced the Bearcats with a career-high 20 points including another career-best five trifectas. She also tied a career-high with a game-high four steals. Senior forward Shanice Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara/Monroe CC) followed with 17 points to go along with four rebounds. In addition, freshman forward IImar'I Thomas (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) totaled eight points, a team-high five rebounds, and two assists.
 
// SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Goings is leading UC in scoring with 11.5 points per game. Senior guard Ana Owens (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) follows with 11.1 points and a team-high 4.0 assists each game. Thomas is not far behind with 10.7 points a contest. Johnson totals team bests of 6.0 rebounds and 2.1 steals each contest.
 
After becoming the 26th member of UC women's basketball's 1,000-point club last season, Owens continues her climb up the Bearcats' all-time scoring list. Owens' current 1,374 career points places her 12th. She is on pace to break into the top 10 all-time before the season's end. In addition, starting every game of her collegiate career, Owens is currently third all-time in starts in program history with 114. She is also marked in the Bearcats record book as third all-time in minutes played (4,025), fifth in made 3-pointers (179), 4th in free-throw percentage (.830), and fifth in assists (374).
 
As a team, UC is third in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 0.9. The Bearcats rank fourth in field-goal percentage (.419), assists (14.8 per game), and defensive rebounds (27.7 per game). Furthermore, the Red & Black is fifth-best in scoring defense (62.5 ppg), scoring margin (+4.1), free-throw percentage (.709), field-goal percentage defense (.378), and rebounding margin (+3.9).
 
Individually on the year, Thomas is second in the AAC in field-goal percentage at 59.8 percent, with sophomore forward Angel Rizor (Zebulon. N.C./East Wake) fourth at 57.8. Owens is second in the conference in free-throw percentage at 93.1 percent and is seventh in The American with 4.0 assists a contest. Johnson is eighth-best in the league in steals with 2.1 a game. In addition, Goings knocks down an eighth-in-the-league 2.2 3-pointers per game, while Rizor ranks 10th in the conference in offensive rebounds a contest with 2.6.
 
// SCOUTING THE SHOCKERS
Last time out, Wichita State (10-14, 5-5 AAC) fell, 73-62, to Houston on Saturday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena. Redshirt senior forward Rangie Bessard led three Shockers in double-figures with 15 points. Senior guard Keke Thompson scored 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists, while senior forward Angiee Tompkins added 13 points and five rebounds.
 
For the season, Bessard is averaging team bests of 18.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Redshirt senior guard Diamond Lockhart adds 10.3 points each contest and dishes out a team-high 3.5 assists a game. Junior forward Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage blocks 1.3 shots per contest, while Thompson swipes a team-best 1.4 steals a game.
 
The Shockers rank first in the league in free-throw percentage at 77.5 percent and second in field-goal percentage 43.4 percent. WSU is also tops in the conference in offensive-rebound percentage at 38.5 percent. Wichita State averages 65.5 points per game, but gives up 67.1. The Shockers outrebound their opponents by four boards, +4.0, and block 3.8 shots a contest. Additionally, WSU makes only 3.0 triple each contest and averages 16.5 turnovers a game.   
 
In the preseason, the conference newcomer was picked to finish 10th in the 12-team AAC.
