CINCINNATI - Neil Stafford, the sixth-year head coach of the University of Cincinnati women's soccer program, has announced his 2018 signing class that is comprised of nine individuals that have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their educational and athletic careers with the Bearcats. The class, which features four local products and seven total Ohioans, will join the program in the fall for the start of the 2018 campaign.
"We are incredibly excited about this class," Stafford said of the newest members of the program. "We have been waiting a long time for this class to arrive. I think it has great balance; there is a real attacking presence in this class, strong defenders and a calming influence in the midfield. Their characteristics and their personalities are really going to add to our program as we call this Year One of Phase Two. This is the type of class we like to bring in to continue what we are doing here and what we are building with our Culture of Excellence."
The signing class includes local products Emi Carlo (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Development Academy / Lebanon HS), Kiley Keehan (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Development Academy / Walnut Hills HS), Madison Lindsay (Lebanon, Ohio / Cincinnati Development Academy Premier / Lebanon HS) and Annie Metzger (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Development Academy Premier / Mason HS) and three more players from the state of Ohio, including Vanessa DiNardo (Strongsville, Ohio / Cleveland FC / Strongsville HS), Camryn Hartman (Bay Village, Ohio / Cleveland United / Magnificat HS) and Ally Sidloski (Strongsville, Ohio / Cleveland FC / Strongsville HS). Additionally, the class will bring in two players from outside of Ohio, including Alli Pestaina from Brimfield, Mass. (Boston Breakers Development Academy / Worcester Academy) and Brandi Thomsen from Brookfield, Wis. (Elmbrook United / Brookfield Central HS). When the freshman join the program this fall, they will also join newcomer Sydney Kilgore (Oak Hills HS), a local product who recently transferred into the program after playing two seasons at Indiana.
This year's class features four players listed as forwards, three in the defense and two in the midfield to create the balance Stafford spoke of as the Bearcats continue to build upon five years of success under Stafford and his coaching staff. Each group will be called upon to carry the torch for the graduating seniors and continue to elevate the program that rose to as high as #11 in the RPI last year, which is up 216 spots from before Stafford and his staff took over the UC program that has now won 54 matches in five years.
Quality players have helped build the program and, with the addition of 2017 All-American DiNardo, the Bearcats attack will feature a trio of players that were named Ohio Player of the Year during their prep careers. She will be joined by Sophie Gorman and Jill Vetere, who earned their honors playing for McNicholas (2016) and Mason (2014), respectively. All three players also earned All-America honors during their high school careers as well.
The newest additions will look help not only the offense continue to find the back of the net, but also prevent opponents from doing the same, a staple of the first five years under Stafford. In that time, the defense has allowed fewer goals from one year to the next, giving up just 11 last year, tying the fewest allowed in a season in program history. So far, the Bearcats have allowed 23.6 goals per season under Stafford while averaging 32.2 scored.
While each individual will work to become integrated into the program and the current roster, several already have spent time playing with one another, whether it be with their high school or their club sides. Two pairs of players that have signed played together for their respective high schools, including Carlo and Lindsay at Lebanon and DiNardo and Sidloski at Strongsville. On the club side, Carlo and Keehan played for Cincinnati Development Academy, Lindsay and Metzger for CDA Premier and DiNardo and Sidloski for Cleveland FC.
