The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team is set to lift the lid on the 2018 season this week as the Bearcats will play host to Louisville Friday at 3 p.m. The game against the Cardinals will be played at Gettler Stadium and will be the first of 10 home games UC will play in 2018.

The 2018 season will mark the final campaign in the BIG EAST Conference for the Bearcats after it was announced in October that the American Athletic Conference will sponsor women's lacrosse beginning next year (2019). This year, ECU will field a varsity team for the first time and will join UC, UConn and Temple as the four AAC members with programs. The league will welcome in both Florida and Vanderbilt, who also are current affiliate members of the BIG EAST, to form the six-team league.

When the Bearcats and Cardinals square off Friday, it will mark the first time in program history that UC opened its season playing on its home turf. In the previous 10 season, the Bearcats had opened every season of play as the visitors.
// LIFTING THE LID - SEASON
Cincinnati is 3-7 all-time in its first game of the season after falling at Ohio State, 18-7, last year to open the 2017 campaign. The Bearcats are an even 5-5 all-time in their first home game of the season and have won two in a row, including a 21-6 defeat of Gardner-Webb one year ago.

The Cardinals are coming off an 11-8 season from one year ago in which they posted a 3-4 mark in the ACC before earning a berth into the NCAA Tournament. In the national event, UL dropped a 12-6 decision to #16 James Madison in the first round of play. The Cardinals lost their Top 2 offensive weapons from last year in All-Americans Hannah Koloski and Meghan Siverson, who combined to score 118 of the team's 212 goals and accounted for 128 of UL's 276 points. Scott Teeter is in his first year at the helm of the program after building a 145-120 record in 15 years of service at Canisius.
// IN THE SERIES - BEARCATS vs. CARDINALS
Cincinnati and Louisville have played all 10 years the Bearcats have had a program with the Cardinals claiming victory in all 10 meetings. Last year, UC fell at #20 UL, 14-8, in a March 1 game played in Louisville.
// RETURNING HONOREES
Two Bearcats return to the turf this year after securing BIG EAST honors last season. Both Monica Borzillo and Amanda Donovan were named All-BIG EAST Conference Second Team following the 2017 season to double the program's all-time conference honorees list. Previously, Courtney Curtis (2015 second team) and Kyara Bynder (2016 first team) were the only UC players that had been honored with postseason conference accolades.
// RECORD BREAKER
Borzillo earned conference recognition after she several program records during the 2016-17 season, including the single-season marks for points and assists. She finished the season with 39 goals, 34 assists and 73 total points to lead the team in all categories, and ranked fourth in the BIG EAST with 2.00 assists per game. Additionally, the freshman broke the school records for assists and points in a single game when she dished out six helpers and totaled 10 points in a conference game against Butler on April 1. Borzillo finished the season ranked among the top-50 of the NCAA in assists (29th), assists per game (31st), points (25th), points per game (26th), shots per game (41st) and shots on goal per game (41st). She was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week a league-leading five times and earned one spot on the honor roll this season.

Donovan proved herself as the team's engine in the midfield, racking up both offensive and defensive stats for the Bearcats. She was second on the team with 33 points off 25 goals and seven assists while also ranking first in caused turnovers (28), fourth in ground balls (33) and fourth in draw controls (26). Her 1.65 caused turnovers per game were good for fourth in the BIG EAST and 53rd in the NCAA. She recorded career-high marks with five caused turnovers and three ground balls in a game against No. 20 Louisville on March 1 and scored a career-best five goals against Butler.

The Bearcats will make the first road trip of the season next week as they will travel to South Carolina for a pair of game. First, UC will meet Gardner-Webb in a 5 p.m. contest in Boiling Springs, S.C., on Friday, February 16, before closing out the trip on Sunday, February 18, with a Noon contest at Wintrop in Rock Hill, S.C.
