PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Two University of Cincinnati women's basketball student-athletes garnered American Athletic Conference weekly distinctions on Monday with freshman forward IImar'I Thomas tabbed as Freshman of the Week, while junior guard Nikira Goings was chosen for the Weekly Honor Roll.
The pair was instrumental last week in helping UC go 2-0. Thomas (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) averaged 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds each game in a reserve role off the bench, while Goings (Marietta, Ga./Osborne) posted 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 3-point makes, and 3.2 steals per.
In a 75-69 victory at Wichita State on Wednesday, Thomas added 14 points and five rebounds, while Goings poured in a career-best 26 points, including five makes from behind the 3-point arc.
The duo continued with Thomas leading the way for UC with 18 points, to go along with eight rebounds and two assists, while Goings sustained her hot shooting with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, in an 83-52 home win Saturday vs. Tulane.
Monday's honor is the fifth time this season Thomas has been selected as the AAC's Freshman of the Week. Meanwhile, Goings' league accolade is the first of her career.
On the season, Thomas is 20th in the AAC in scoring at 11.2 points per game and 19th in rebounding at 11.2 boards an outing. The 17-year-old is also shooting a league-best 62.6 percent from the field. Goings ranks 17th in The American in scoring at 12.4 points each contest and is sixth in both 3-point field-goal percentage and 3-point makes a game at 38.5 percent and 2.4, respectively.
