SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 2018 University of Cincinnati baseball season got off to a bang as the Bearcats took down California 3-1 in the first game under new head coach Scott Googins.

Kyle Mottice led off with a homerun, earned a bases-loaded RBI and Manny Rodriguez added in another round-tripper to give enough run insurance to starter J.T. Perez. Perez struck out five with one earned run while David Orndorff earned the save in 3.0 innings of work with three strikeouts.

// NOTABLES
• For the second year in a row, the Bearcats hit a homerun in the first inning. Last season it was accomplished by Connor McVey. This year, Mottice started things off on a good note
• Mottice finished 2-for-4 with two RBI in the leadoff spot
• The team totaled eight hits, with the homeruns by Mottice and Rodriguez being the only for extra-bases
• Perez earned his first win of the season, pitching 5.0 innings with four hits, one run, no walks and five strikeouts
Doug Lowe II followed with a scoreless frame
• Orndorff faced one batter over the minimum in his 3.0 frames
• The Bearcats also shined on defense, turning three double plays while not committing an error

// KEY INNINGS
Bottom of the 1st

• Mottice's homerun on the fourth Cal pitch of the game gave UC a 1-0 lead
Top of the 2nd
• California evened the score on a two-out double down the left field line and a triple to right center. The next batter grounded out on the second pitch. The two outs before the scoring game by way of a around-the-horn double play
Bottom of the 2nd
• The Bearcats wasted no time getting right back into things. With two outs, singles by Cole Murphy, Treg Haberkorn and Eric Santiago loaded the bases. Mottice stayed hot in his second at-bat of the night, hitting an infield single to pick up another RBI. A great hustle by Santiago into second base kept the inning alive.
Bottom of the 4th
• The final run of the night came in the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth as Rodriguez smacked a solo shot over the left field wall
