HUNTSVILLE, Texas – University of Cincinnati baseball continued to fight hard against Sam Houston State in the series finale on Saturday but ultimately fell by a score of 10-6.
 
The contest had multiple ties and lead changes before being decided in the later innings.
 
// NOTABLES
• Cincinnati falls to 2-4 while Sam Houston State improves to 5-1 on the season
• After the first pitch of the game was thrown, a lightning delay halted action for about an hour until play was able to resume
Treg Haberkorn went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI
Connor McVey also had three hits, including a homerun
Manny Rodriguez finished 2-for-5 with two extra-base hits, a homerun and a double
• Freshman Dondrae Bremner went 2-for-4 with a double in his first career start
• Fellow freshman Joey Wiemer also had two hits
• Rodriguez and McVey got UC on the board with back-to-back homeruns in the third. It was the first time Bearcats hit consecutive long balls since Kyle Mottice and A.J. Bumpass did so on March 18, 2017 in the sixth inning against Northeastern
Cam Alldred struck out four in 3.2 innings as the starter
Nathan Kroger suffered the loss with two earned runs in 2.1 innings
 
// KEY INNINGS
Bottom of the 2nd

• Sam Houston State struck first. A single and hit batter followed by a sacrifice bunt put two in scoring position for the Bearkats. Two singles later SHSU had an early two-run lead
Top of the 3rd
• The Bearcats answered back loudly in next half inning. Haberkorn started things off with a single to left. After two groundouts, Rodriguez hit a towering homerun to deep center to tie the game. The Bearcats went back-to-back as McVey followed with a solo homerun to left to give UC a one-run lead
Top of the 4th
• UC brought two more runs across in the fourth. The inning started with a walk to Cole Murphy and singles by Wiemer and Dondrae Bremner, loading the bases. Haberkorn singled one run home before Mason DeAnna reached on a fielder's choice to score another
Bottom of the 4th
• Three runs came in for the Bearkats in the bottom of the frame as they were able to tie the contest at five. A single, double and ground out plated the first run. Another single and another double put the game into a deadlock.
Top of the 6th
• The Bearcats got back in front and took a one-run lead when Bremner and Haberkorn hit back-to-back doubles down opposite lines
Bottom of the 6th
• The UC lead was short-lived as SHSU worked back to take the lead for good, scoring two runs in the frame. A hit batter, walk and sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position. A wild pitch and sacrifice fly allowed two to come home.
Bottom of the 7th
• A double and two base hits allowed Sam Houston State to add another run to its lead. Another base hit, error and groundout made it a three-run game. The Bearkats then executed a successful squeeze bunt to make it a 10-6 game

• The Bearcats have scheduled a home game this Tuesday, February 27 at 4 p.m. against Northern Kentucky

• Next weekend UC travels to UT-Martin for a four-game series
