HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The University of Cincinnati baseball team worked back but fell short against Sam Houston State Friday afternoon in the first game of a double header, losing by a score of 5-3.
 
UC evens to 2-2 on the season while SHSU improves to 3-1.
 
// NOTABLES
Manny Rodriguez had a great day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a triple
J.T. Perez went 6.0 innings in the start with eight hits, four runs, two walks and five strikeouts
Jarod Yoakam entered the game in a perilous situation with runners on second and third and no outs. The first batter he faced reached on a fielder's choice as the runner at home was thrown out by Rodriguez. Yoakam then struck out the next batter, allowed a RBI single and got a flyout to get out of the jam nearly unharmed.
• The Bearkats had single tally in each of the first four innings and one in the eighth

Bottom of the 1st

• Sam Houston State got things started with a single and a two-out double to score the first runner of the game
Top of the 2nd
• It did not take long for UC to reply. A.J. Bumpass started the second frame with a base hit. Rodriguez followed with another base hit. The SHSU third baseman threw the ball into the dirt trying to get the out at first and both Bumpass and Rodriguez advanced into scoring position. Cole Murphy earned the first RBI for UC when he flew out to right for a sacrifice fly.
Bottom of the 2nd
• The Bearkats got back out in front the same way the scored in the first: a single and a two-out double, making the game 2-1.
Bottom of the 3rd
• A solo homerun to left center added to Sam Houston State's slim lead
Bottom of the 4th
• The Bearkats got a lead-off single to start the frame. A sacrifice bunt and a balk moved the runner to third. The runner scored and put the score at 4-1 on a groundout.
Top of the 7th
• After Perez struck out the side to end the sixth, UC gained some momentum. Rodriguez led off with a triple and scored easily on a pinch-hit groundout by Joey Wiemer
Top of the 8th
• It became a one-run game when Eric Santiago and Kyle Mottice started the eighth with back-to-back walks. After a Mason DeAnna sacrifice bunt, Connor McVey hit a sacrifice fly.
Bottom of the 8th
• SHSU got a run back on an unearned run after a walk, error, fielder's choice and base hit
