CINCINNATI – One day after defeating its intrastate rival for the first time in program history, two members of the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team were selected for weekly awards from the BIG EAST Conference as Monica Borzillo was named the Attacker of the Week and McKenna Rushford was named the Midfielder of the Week.
Borzillo had a strong outing a she netted five goals and added a trio of assists while Rushford scored six goals for the second game in a row to help the Bearcats move to 3-1, the best start in program history. The duo combined for 14 points, including 11 goals, as the Bearcats defeated Ohio State, 17-12, Monday night at home.
In Monday's win over Ohio State, Borzillo totaled five goals, three assists, eight points and three ground balls as the Bearcats earned their first ever win over the Buckeyes. Her final goal of the contest came with 2:08 remaining and helped halt an OSU run that saw the Buckeyes score twice in a row and cut the lead to 16-10. This week's award is the second in a row for Borzillo and her seventh career honor from the BIG EAST after being named the freshman of the week five times last year.
Rushford had a monster game to lead Cincinnati over Ohio State with six goals, six caused turnovers, four ground balls and two draw controls. Her six goals are second-most in Bearcat single-game history. The honor for Rushford is the first of her career and also marks the first time the Bearcats have earned the midfielder award since the league split the offensive player of the week honor into attacker and midfielder in 2015.
The Bearcats return to action Friday at 3 p.m. as they will play host to Central Michigan.
