COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The first day of action at the Charlie Thomas Invitational for the University of Cincinnati track and field program came to a close Friday night with several strong performances being recorded by the Bearcats at the meet being held inside the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the Texas A&M campus in College Station, Texas. Overall, two school records were broken, including a big run by the women in the distance medley relay along with Alex Bloom breaking his own heptathlon 60m dash record.
// DMR BREAKS RECORD
The women's distance medley relay was the lone track event run for the Bearcats Friday night and they made the most of their opportunity as the team of Sam Mikula, Tiona Lattimore, Alexis Anton and Meg Westerheide combined to smash the school record by running 11:41.09, which bettered the previous mark by more than nine seconds after the team in 2011 ran 11:49.12. Tonight's time, compared to other times run prior to the start of races tonight, is the fastest run so far in the AAC this year, bettering the time of 11:42.90 that Temple ran last week at a meet at Penn State. It also is just the third time turned in this season by an AAC team that broke the 12-minute barrier.
In the race, Mikula, a true freshman, ran a split of 3:35.72 to put the Bearcats in a great position as she ran six seconds faster than her previous DMR appearance (3:41.0) opening the race on the 1,200m leg. Mikula than handed off the baton to Tiona Lattimore who has been on a tear of late, this time splitting 53.4 on the 400m leg before Anton ran 2:13.6 on the 800m leg. On the anchor, Westerheide split 4:58.55 to break the record that had stood for seven years after the previous team broke an 11-year record.
All told, the final three legs would rank highly in the program's all-time Top 10. Lattimore, who has run seven personal best times in her seven individual races in 2018, would see her 53.4 time rank as the school record while Anton would improve her all-time best (2:13.75) for the #7 mark in UC history. Westerheide also would make history as her split would not only rank her #2 all-time in Bearcats history, but also would make her just the second UC runner to break the 5-minute barrier.
// URBANO SCORES BIG IN PENTATHLON
Urbano made her pentathlon season debut Friday as she navigated the five-event competition with three personal-bests to score a total of 3,830 points, moving her up to #3 all-time after posting a 120-point improvement over her AAC winning mark of 3,710 points from last year. Urbano opened with a time of 9.25 in the 60m hurdles to score 858 points and just missing her PR by 0.01 seconds after running 9.24 last year.
In the high jump, Urbano posted a huge pair of clearances. First, she cleared 1.68m to tie her personal best before then taking down 1.71m (5-07.25) to score 867 points after three unsuccessful attempts at 1.74m. With her best of 1.71m, Urbano not only moved up to #3 in the school's pentathlon Top 10, she also moved into the #8 position on the program's all-time Top 10 ledger.
From there, Urbano was not done as she added two more PRs, first in the shot put and then in the long jump. In the throwing event, she put the ball out to 11.33m (37-02.25) to score 617 points and finish second in the competition. With that throw, she moved up to #3 in the pentathlon Top 10 in UC history. She then jumped 5.65m (18-06.50) to not only score 744 points, but also move up to #3 on the pentathlon charts in the event as well. Finally, she ran 2:25.96 in the 800m run for her final 744 points to close out the day and post the best overall score in the AAC so far this year.
// BLOOM OPENS HEPTATHLON
Alex Bloom competed in the first day of action in the heptathlon as he scored 3,258 points in the first four events to sit third overall (second among collegiate entries). Bloom opened the day by running 7.03 in the 60m dash to scored 872 points and lower his school heptathlon record by 0.06 seconds. He followed that by scoring 845 points in the long jump as he recorded a mark of 7.13m (23-04.75), which is was 6cm shy of his all-time best.
In the shot put, Bloom finished fourth overall as she sent the ball out to a distance of 12.78m (41-11.25) to not only grab 654 points but also record a PR that pushed him up to #3 on the UC heptathlon list.
