CINCINNATI - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) today announced its annual NCAA Division I Cross Country Team Academic Awards for the 2017 season and both the University of Cincinnati men's and women's programs garnered recognition for the efforts. Overall, the women tallied a 3.56 grade-point average during their most recent season while the men scored a 3.36 GPA.
For the year, 423 teams were recognized by the Association with 228 of those being women's programs and 195 men's. In order to qualify for the annual academic honor, a team must carry a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better during the season.
The women, led by coach Lara Crofford, have earned the academic honor from the USTFCCCA each of the past four seasons and 10th time in the last 12 years. This season, the women placed ninth overall in the American Athletic Conference meet with Madison Dunlap earning all-conference honors by finishing 15th overall in the race. Her honor is just the second earned by a UC runner in the AAC era and the second in as many years as well. As a team, the women scored 209 points, their second-fewest in the American behind only the previous season's 180.
The honor for the men is their second big award this season after coach Sam Burroughs' team was selected for the AAC Men's Team Academic Excellence Award, which is given to the team wit the highest cumulative GPA for the season. It marked the second year in a the Bearcats have collected the men's honor. Overall, this year's USTFCCCA honor is the 12th in a row as UC's men have been honored each year dating back to the 2006 season.
The harriers, along with the remaining members of the track & field program, are currently in the midst of the 2018 indoor track and field season. Many of the distance runners will travel to Nashville, Tenn., this weekend to compete in the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt this Friday and Saturday inside the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility.
