WESTFIELD, Ind. – In its first action of the 2018 spring season, University of Cincinnati men's soccer played DePaul to a 0-0 draw on Saturday at the Circle City Showcase at Grand Park.
Defense was the story on Saturday with the Bearcats clamping down on the Blue Demons offense throughout the match. Though a total team defensive effort, goalkeepers Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) and Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md.) were both strong between the pipes to record the clean sheet.
Once the Red & Black's strong defensive presence was solidified early, it began to create some chances on the offensive end. Midfielder Mohamed Elmardi (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East), in his first game back since a knee injury, had an opportunity in the second half off of a cross, but shot it just above the crossbar. Forwards Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) and Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) were both dangerous in the attack as well, but just weren't' able to cash in.
Saturday's matchup was the first of five spring matches for the Bearcats. On Wednesday, March 7, UC will welcome local USL club FC Cincinnati to Gettler Stadium. Kickoff is tentatively scheduled for 7:30 p.m. but could change due to potential inclement weather. General admission tickets will be for sale online for $5. Tickets are available for purchase online here and are print at home only. Parking will be available at Calhoun and Corry Garages for $5. Concessions will be open including beer for sale.
