2018 AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET
CINCINNATI – The American Athletic Conference regular-season champion, 10th-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats (27-4, 16-2 American) have earned the top seed in the 2018 Aaron's American Championship and will play the winner of the eighth-seed UConn (14-17, 7-11) vs. ninth-seed SMU (16-15, 6-12) matchup in quarterfinals action Friday, March 9 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. Tipoff is set for noon ET on ESPN2 and 700 WLW.
The UConn-SMU first-round matchup is scheduled for Thursday, March 8 at noon ET on ESPNU.
The Bearcats are coming off a thrilling 62-61 road win at No. 11 Wichita State on Sunday. Jacob Evans III led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting with a trio of three-pointers and seven rebounds. Jarron Cumberland (11 points), Kyle Washington (11) and Gary Clark (10) also reached double-figures in scoring.
The victory over Wichita State secured Cincinnati's first outright conference regular-season championship since 2002.
UConn and SMU both suffered road losses on Sunday. The Huskies dropped an 81-71 decision at No. 25 Houston while the Mustangs suffered a 65-54 setback at USF.
The Bearcats won both regular-season meetings with UConn: 65-57 on Feb. 3 in Storrs, Conn., and 77-52 on Feb. 22 in Highland Heights, Ky. UC also won both contests with SMU: 76-56 on Jan. 7 in Highland Heights, Ky., and 76-51 on Feb. 11 in Dallas.
Cincinnati and UConn have met in every American Championship since the league was formed prior to the 2013-14 campaign. The Bearcats-Huskies series is tied 13-13 overall. UC has won the last five meetings overall but UConn has claimed five of six conference tournament meetings.
UC leads the SMU series 9-5 overall. The Mustangs defeated the Bearcats 71-56 in the 2017 American Championship title game.
