For the second consecutive year, University of Cincinnati catcher Joey Thomas has been named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List presented by BaseballSavings.com, as announced by the Greater Witchita Area Sports Commission on March 6. The Johnny Bench Award recognizes the top collegiate catcher in the country based on athletic ability, sportsmanship, team leadership and character.
Thomas has started seven of the Bearcats' twelve games this season, battling a minor injury early on. He had a big night as UC took down No. 12 Indiana on Tuesday, going 2-for-5 with a run scored in the 8-3 victory. The senior is a team captain and was on the Dean's List (3.40 GPA or higher) this past fall semester.
Semifinalists for the 2018 Johnny Bench Award will be announced on May 16. Finalists will be voted on by a national panel and will be announced June 4 with the winner selected at the College World Series. The winner will be publicly announced at the 21st Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 28, 2018.
