CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati baseball took the series over Toledo with a 9-8 win on Sunday afternoon in an overall messy game.
 
Only seven of the game's 17 runs were earned while twenty total free bases were handed out on the day. The Bearcats left 16 men on base but were able to get just enough men across home plate for the victory.
 
// NOTABLES
• The Bearcats improve to 9-10 on the season while the Rockets drop to 4-13
• UC's three pitchers threw well overall in the contest
Nathan Kroger gave up just one earned run on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks. After two errors while he was on the mound, six unearned runs scored resulting in his early departure after 3.2 frames
A.J. Kullman pitched well in the middle innings. He went 2.2 with one hit, one run, one walk and four strikeouts. His only blemish on the day was a solo homerun
Jarod Yoakam earned his second win on the weekend, improving to 4-0 and keeping his empty ERA. He went 2.2 frames with one walk and two strikeouts. He entered the game with two men on and one out and got a ground ball, double-play to get out of the jam
• Offensively, Joey Wiemer continued his big weekend with a 2-for-5 performance with two RBI and two runs scored
Treg Haberkorn also earned two hits
A.J. Bumpass got the winning rally started with a triple down the right field line
Joey Thomas earned the game-clinching RBI with a double to left field
 
// KEY INNINGS
Top of the 1st   
Toledo was the first to score with two singles in the first inning
Bottom of the 1st    
• Cincinnati then took advantage of many free passes to lead 4-1 after one. Five walks, one hit batter and one ground out RBI gave the Bearcats the lead
Top of the 4th   
• The Rockets had a big inning, scoring six runs thanks to some mistakes by the Bearcats defense. The first batter of the frame reached on an error. A double and another error allowed the first runner of the inning to come home. After that, a single, triple and homerun allowed Toledo to take a 7-4 lead. Kyle Mottice made a leaping grab on a ball hit up the middle to end the rally
Bottom of the 5th
• UC started its comeback with a four-run inning. A walk, wild pitch and an error started the scoring. Haberkorn then singled and Manny Rodriguez walked to load the bases. A five-pitch walk to Bumpass followed for an easy RBI. Wiemer singled in a run before another bases-loaded walk, this time to Connor McVey, made it a 8-7 Bearcats' lead

• Toledo tied the contest on a solo homerun
Bottom of the 7th
• The winning run came home when Wiemer singled, stole second, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a Thomas double to left field
 
// UP NEXT
• UC remains home for a midweek contest. The Bearcats host the RedHawks of Miami on Tuesday, March 20 at 6 p.m.
• The team will begin conference play next weekend, opening up with a three-game series at Tulane
