CINCINNATI – Three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half helped propel the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team to a 12-10 win over Detroit, Monday at Gettler Stadium.
The Bearcats (5-1) won their fifth consecutive game and got strong offensive performances from Taylor Gysin, Sam Mlkvy and Monica Borzillo along with a standout defensive performance from goalkeeper Giuliana Durso.
Gysin set career highs with four goals on six shots and five ground balls. It is her fourth multiple-goal game of the season. Mlkvy had a hat trick in the first half and also picked up five ground balls while causing three turnovers. Borzillo had a goal and a season-best four assists. She has scored in each of UC's six games this season and has two or more assists in each of the last five games. Borzillo also had four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Durso faced a season-high 34 shots and made a season-best 14 saves.

Things were tied up at six goals apiece at the break. Mlkvy had a first-half hat trick along with single goals from Borzillo, Donovan and Gysin. Detroit had scores from six different players and tied things up after being down 3-0 early. UC held the possession better with a 22-12 edge in ground balls and had a 21-15 shots advantage over the Titans.

In their 11th varsity season, the Bearcats are now off to a 5-1 start, the program record for the best start. In 2014, UC picked up its fifth win eight games into the season. UC picked up its fifth win in its sixth game Monday.
