CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer closed its 2018 spring season on Thursday with a 1-1 draw versus the Dayton Flyers at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio.

Redshirt sophomore Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) scored the Bearcats' lone goal of the match. Redshirt sophomore Elias Helbig (Denver, Colo./East/Creighton) sent a corner kick into the box where freshman Mads Tranberg (Copenhagen, Denmark) made initial contact with the ball and Melink was there for the cleanup inside the six-yard box to put UC up, 1-0. The Red & Black continued to create chances in the second half, but saw the Flyers add the equalizer late as the two teams played to a 1-1 draw.

The decision wrapped up UC's five-game spring slate in which it gained valuable experience against solid competition. Notably, the Bearcats were edged, 1-0, by local, professional side FC Cincinnati in front of a packed house at Gettler Stadium on March 7. The Red & Black competed for 90 minutes, but a late first-half goal by FCC was the difference. UC returned to Gettler on April 7 and blanked Bellarmine, 2-0, with Melink and redshirt sophomore Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) each scoring goals. On the defensive end, goalkeepers freshman Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md.), redshirt freshman Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc), and junior Jake Mutlu (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West/Cincinnati State) combined for the clean sheet.

Bearcats head coach Hylton Dayes was pleased with the result at Dayton and the progress the team made in the spring.

"I thought it was a very competitive match," said Dayes, "especially in the second half when we created several quality scoring chances. Playing a quality opponent such as Dayton on the road was a good way to close out a successful spring season."
