AUBURN, Ala. - The first day of action at the War Eagle Invitational came to a close Friday night for the University of Cincinnati track and field team with the distance group having a solid showing as four individuals posted times that rank among the Top 10 all-time in program history following their runs at Hutsell-Rosen Track on the Auburn campus.
// GERMAN PRECISION
In his first 5,000m race on the outdoor track for the Bearcats, German transfer Aaron Bienenfeld made a huge statement as he raced to a time of 14:12.84 to win the invitational section Friday night. Not only did he win the race, he posted the #2 time in UC history with only All-American Eric Finan running faster with a time of 13:44.91 in 2011. In fact, Bienenfeld and Finan are the only two Bearcats that have bettered the previous school record of All-American Ron Stapleton who ran 14:23.28 in 1972. With his time, Bienenfeld currently holds the fastest time in the American Athletic Conference (based on marks listed ahead of tonight's races), bettering the time of 14:20.65 run by Tulsa's Adam Roderique in March.
// FAST FIVES FOR M&M
Hannah Markel and Sam Mikula raced together in the invitational section of the 5,000m run and both collected fast times with Markel running 17:23.15 and Mikula 17:27.12 as the duo placed fifth and seventh overall, respectively. Markel ran 17:40.44 last week at the Tennessee Relays before lowering her PR by 17.29 seconds tonight and move onto the program's all-time Top 10 at #7 while Mikula completed her first collegiate 5,000m race to post the #9 time in program history. Combined, the duo added just the second and third marks to the event's Top 10 list since 2011 with Juliana Madzia running 17:15.93 last year for the #6 time in Bearcats history.
// ANTON EDGES PR
The first event on the track was the women's 1,500m run invitational section with both Alexis Anton and Madison Dunlap taking part. In the end, Anton raced to a time of 4:38.06 to finish second overall and Dunlap placed 12th with a time of 4:44.89. Anton's time was a slight improvement over her PR as she lowered her time by 0.02 seconds to remain at #7 on the program's all-time Top 10 ledger. Although she finished second overall, Anton also was the top collegiate finisher in the race as the winner is a professional runner.
// POWERFUL PROVINCE
In the field, three events were contested for the men and women, including the triple jump, hammer and javelin. On the men's side, Chris Province, who's teammates voted him the male athlete of the week for last weekend, continued to shine as he reached the finals of both throwing events and posted a personal best in one. First up, Province placed eighth overall in the hammer as he tossed a PR 51.83m (170-00), which measures out to an improvement of 6' 8". He then took to the javelin runway and placed sixth overall with a best of 50.00m (164-00), and, while it was not a PR, it was his second meet in a row with a mark over 50m.
