CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati baseball played another close game against No. 24 UConn on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Huskies prevailed and won the series with an 8-5 victory.
 
// NOTABLES
• UC is 19-19 on the season and 8-7 in conference
• UConn sits at 22-12-1 and 7-5
• Every Bearcats starter got a hit in the game as UC outhit UConn 14-13
• It was a big day of offense with eleven doubles and two homeruns between the two teams. The Bearcats left eleven runners on base while the Huskies left fourteen on
• With a single in the third inning, Manny Rodriguez kept his reach base streak alive. He has reached in 40 straight games dating back to last season
Joey Thomas, A.J. Bumpass, Connor McVey, Dondrae Bremner and Eric Santiago all had two hits each
• Santiago had two doubles, Murphy hit a homerun and Kyle Mottice, Bumpass, McVey and Bremner all had a double
• Murphy led the team with two RBI and almost added on a ninth-inning, game-tying homerun, but the ball missed being a round-tripper by a mere margin and was caught on the warning track
 
// KEY INNINGS
Top of the 1st
The Huskies struck first. A single, hit batter and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Starter Cam Alldred then earned a strikeout but gave up a run in the next at-bat on a full-count walk. Alldred worked out of the jam with a flyout
Top of the 2nd
• UConn added to its lead with a single, walk and two-run double
Bottom of the 2nd
The Bearcats got on the board when McVey doubled and Murphy hit a homerun to right field
Bottom of the 5th
• UC tied the game when Thomas singled, Bumpass doubled and McVey hustled out an infield hit for the RBI
Top of the 7th
• The Huskies broke the tie with a double, single and another double in the seventh that put the score at 5-3
Top of the 8th
• UConn tacked on two more runs in the next frame. A hit batter, single and ground out put two runners in scoring position with one out. After a walk loaded the bases, the Huskies hit a two-RBI single up the middle
Bottom of the 8th
• UC got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth. Bremner singled, Santiago doubled and Bremner came in to score on a base hit by Treg Haberkorn. Mottice then grounded out to second to score Santiago from third
Top of the 9th
• The game became an 8-5 final when UConn scored its last run on a solo homerun that just cleared the fence in left field
 
// UP NEXT
• UC will not have any midweek action due to finals week but will be back home at Marge Schott Stadium to host Kansas next weekend for a non-conference series
• The first game in the Kansas series is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
