TicketsCINCINNATI – The BIG EAST Conference today announced its weekly award winners for women's lacrosse with University of Cincinnati sophomore Sam Mlkvy earning a spot on the Honor Roll. Mlkvy had a big week as she helped the Bearcats (8-8, 1-7 BIG EAST) to back-to-back wins that not only snapped a long losing streak, but also helped the team capture a program single-season wins total with one more game to play.
Mlkvy sparked the Bearcats to a 2-1 week with 14 points off 10 goals and four assists, 16 ground balls and 21 draw controls. In Saturday's win at Butler, the redshirt sophomore went off for seven goals, an assist, seven ground balls and 10 draw controls. She also had five points (2g, 3a), nine ground balls and seven draws in Monday's win over East Carolina. She currently has 41 points on 33 goals and eight assists this season, moving her to eighth on the single-season points ledger and ninth for goals in a season.
Looking back on her last two games, Mlkvy made several adjustments to the program's single-game Top 10 lists as well. Against the Bulldogs, Mlkvy recorded the fifth-most points in a game (8), the second-most goals in a game (7), the ninth-most ground balls (7) and the third-most draw controls (10) in a game. She came back two days later against the Pirates to post the fourth-most ground balls (9) and the 10th-most draw controls (7) in a game.
This week's honor is the first of the season for Mlkvy and the second of her career after she was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on May 3, 2016. Overall, Mlkvy's honor is the eighth earned by a Bearcats player this year and the third selection to the Honor Roll after Giuliana Durso (March 6) and Alexandra Fess (April 10) earned awards.
UC returns to the turf at Gettler Stadium this Sunday at noon as the Bearcats will close out the 2018 campaign against Villanova. Prior to the game, the program will honor its three seniors - Bridget Cleary, Lauren Hudson and Schuyler Nissen - in Senior Day festivities.
