CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's basketball coach Mick Cronin has announced the promotion of Darren Savino to co-associate head coach with Larry Davis.
"Darren has been deserving of a head coaching opportunity for the last four years," Cronin said. "Our players will tell you how important he is to our program. His professionalism, his understanding of strategy and his love and dedication to the players is second to none. We are very lucky to have him. He is dedicated to making our program better."
Savino concluded his eighth season as an assistant coach at Cincinnati in 2017-18. Since his arrival, the Bearcats have compiled a 207-72 (.742) mark, appeared in eight consecutive NCAA tournaments, won two American Athletic Conference regular-season championships (since the league's formation in 2013-14) and claimed one AAC tournament title.
During the 2014-15 season, Savino took on added responsibilities as the interim associate head coach for the final 25 games while Cronin missed practices and games due to health reasons.
Savino's college coaching career spans 22 seasons with stops at schools along the east coast, southwest and Ohio Valley. He joined the UC staff after a four-year stint at Rutgers where he was a key New York and New Jersey recruiter. He was named the Scarlet Knights interim head coach in April 2010 after the resignation of head coach Fred Hill.
Prior to his term at Rutgers, Savino and Cronin developed a close rapport at Murray State where Savino served as an assistant under Cronin from 2004-06. As a member of the Racers' staff, Savino was involved in every aspect of the program, helping Murray State to two Ohio Valley Conference championships and an NCAA tournament appearance.
Savino held a similar title at Quinnipiac (2002-04), New Mexico (1999-2002), East Carolina (1998-99) and St. John's (1996-98) and served as an administrative assistant at Seton Hall (1995-96).
