Lacrosse Drops Close Game to Visiting Villanova, 10-8, to Close 2018

The 2018 season for the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team came to a close Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium with the Bearcats dropping a closely contested game to Villanova, 10-8.

CINCINNATI - The 2018 season for the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team came to a close Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium with the Bearcats dropping a closely contested game to Villanova, 10-8. The back-and-forth contest saw the lead change hands four times with no team pulling further ahead than by two goals. In the end, the Bearcats fell to 8-9 on the year and 1-8 in their final season as members of the BIG EAST while the visiting Wildcats closed their campaign at 9-7 overall and 4-5 in the BIG EAST.

// HOW IT HAPPENED
Villanova scored the first goal of the game before the Bearcats got on the board with back-to-back strikes from Sam Mlkvy as both goals came 15 seconds apart to five UC a 2-1 lead. After nearly 10 minutes had passed, the visitors tied the game before reclaiming the lead at 3-2 with 9:56 remaining in the first half. The Bearcats tied it once again at Monica Borzillo scored her first of the game to even things at 3-3 before the visitors ran off two in a row for a 5-3 lead at the break.

The Bearcats came out hot to start the second half as Taylor Gysin and Alyssa Adams scored free-position goals just 1:17 into the half to tie things at 5-5. The Wildcats responded with a pair of goals of their own to retake a two-goal lead before the Bearcats responded once again, this time with three in a row for an 8-7 lead. In that stretch, Mlkvy picked-up the hat trick with her third at 19:36 before Amanda Donovan and Borzillo each added goals.

Despite reclaiming the lead, the Bearcats saw it slip away as VU scored on a man-up possession before adding two more goals to close out the game and take the 10-8 score line.

// TEAM RECORDS
With the eight goals scored today, the team finished the year with 201 goals, the most in a single season. That total also marked the first time a UC team has scored 200 or more goals in a single season. The record is one of 10 broken by the team this year. Of those eight goals scored today, three game from free-position shots to give UC 43 FPG on the year to break the single season record of 42 that were scored in the 2009 season.

// SAVES RECORD
Despite the loss, Giuliana Durso recorded eight saves on the day to bring her season total 162, just edging out Katherine Russo for the single-season saves record. Russo has held the record since 2009 when she recorded 161 saves and then duplicated the feat one year later with 161 more saves. Adding the eight saves for Durso today, the Bearcats finished 172 total saves, the second-most in a single-season in UC history behind only the 189 stops posted in the 2010 season.

// CARNEY GOES GROUND
Kate Carney recorded a team-high eight ground balls in the game to post the seventh-best total in a single game at UC. She tied with herself (4/8/18 home game vs. #22 Denver) and Lauren Hudson (3/12/17 at Central Michigan). The team recorded 36 ground balls in the game, marking the sixth-best single-game total (tied with UC Davis, 4/12/08) and the sixth-time UC has recorded 30+ in a game this year.

// RECORD WIN PERCENTAGE
Although UC lost and finished 8-9 overall, the team's winning percentage of 47.1 is the highest in program history. The previous record came in 2013 when the Bearcats went 7-9 to win 43.8 percent of their games. With their win last week against ECU, the Bearcats had already secured the single-season wins record.

// SENIOR DAY
Today also marked the final game for three seniors as Bridget Cleary, Hudson and Schuyler Nissen each completed a four-year career that began in 2015 and has seen the Bearcats increase their win totals in each of the last three years. After winning two as freshmen, the team won four, six and eight games over the final three years to record the most wins by any senior class in program history. Individually, all three started the game, giving Hudson her 67th career start and tying her with Courtney Curtis (2013-16) for the most in program history. By appearing in the game, Hudson (67 games) and Nissen (66 games) played in the second (tie) and seventh-most games, respectively, in program history.
