CINCINNATI - Alex Bloom, a senior on the University of Cincinnati track and field team, recorded three personal-best marks in five events Thursday to take the first day lead in the decathlon at the Jim Click Multis being contested at Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. Bloom, who won three of the five events on the day, was in a back-and-forth battle early on before another big day in the high jump pushed him ahead of his closest competitor by 132 points.
The day opened with Bloom running 11.04 in the 100m dash to score 852 points. His time, which was the fastest of the day, tied his personal best and placed him sixth on the program's decathlon Top 10 list. From there, he took part in the long jump and posted a best of 6.98m (22-10.75) to collect 809 points. That mark left him one point shy of the leader, Aaron Booth (Kansas State) through two events.
Bloom then hit a big PR in the shot put, launching the ball out to 13.23m (43-05.00) to go over 13 meters for the first time in his career and move into fourth on the program's decathlon shot put chart. With he and Booth throwing over 13 meters with very close marks to one another, Bloom reclaimed the lead by one point through three events.
Next came the high jump where Bloom easily won the event as he was the lone competitor to clear 2 meters, winning the event with a best of 2.10m (6-10.75), a full six inches clear of the runner-up. With the 896 points earned, Bloom built a bigger lead before the final event, the 400m dash. In the one lap race, he turned in a time of 50.68 to finish fourth overall and ranks him #10 on the program's decathlon 400m list. With those final 784 points earned, Bloom finished the first day with 4,022 points, just 12 off his school-record total scored last year. Along with last year's total, today's score marked just the second time a UC man has scored over 4,000 points on the first day of a decathlon competition in program history.
