CINCINNATI – Monica Borzillo, who recently finished her sophomore season with the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team, has been named to the 2018 All-BIG EAST Conference Second Team, the league announced today. With the honor, Borzillo becomes the first Bearcats player to earn multiple accolades in a playing career in program history.
The Devon, Pa., native had an outstanding second season with the Bearcats as she once again led the way with team-highs in points (69), goals (42) and assists (27) as UC finished the year with an 8-9 record to break the previous record for wins in a season (7 in 2009 and 2013) while also securing the highest winning percentage in program history for a single season. Borzillo finished the year ranked fifth in the league in assists per game (1.59) while standing fifth as well in points per game (4.06).
One of the top scorers in the program's 11-year history, the attacker posted the second-most points in a season, the second-most goals and the second-most assists in a season. Outside of Laura Simanski's 47 goals in 2009, Borzillo already was the program's single-season record holder in points (73 in 2017) and assists (34 in 2017). During the season, Borzillo tallied 10 points vs. Central Michigan (3/2/18) to tie her own single-game record after recording eight points in UC's first win over Ohio State one week earlier. Her eight goals against CMU set a single-game record as well.
In just two years playing in Cincinnati, Borzillo also has risen up the career Top 10 charts as well, currently sitting second in points (142), fourth in goals (81) and second in assists (61). She trails Simanski by 20 points (162 from 2009-12) as well as 42 goals (146 from 2009-12) and sits just three off the career assists mark of Katie Kiriazoglou, who had 64 from 2010-13.
Historically, the Bearcats now have five total honors from the BIG EAST Conference with Borzillo having earned two. Courtney Curtis was the first UC player to earn a postseason award from the league after being selected to the second team in 2015. One year later, Kyara Byner earned a spot on the first team to make UC history before Borzillo and Amanda Donovan (second team) both were honored last year, marking the first time teammates had been selected in the same year.
With the 2018 season having come to a close, the program is now looking toward an overseas trip to Europe this summer where they will play against competition in the Netherlands and Greece. The team is accepting monetary gifts to help make the trip happen and those interested in helping support the international event can give their gifts here: http://bit.ly/CinLAXGreece.
