Spring practice wrapped up for the Bearcats this past week, but they had not been spending as much time in the practice gym the past couple of months.
The team has been splitting time between campus and a nearby indoor sand volleyball complex. Associate Head Coach Phillip White grew up in southern California playing volleyball on the beaches, and he saw training the Bearcats on sand this spring as a great training tool. White is not the only Bearcat at home in the sand. Assistant Coach Kevin Carroll spent time on those same beaches as a California native who used those skills to help UC Irvine win two NCAA championships. The two of them put together a series of drills and training techniques to prepare the team for a different type of competition, a competition on the sand. According to Coach White, playing sand volleyball changes the players' mindset to more of a tactical game, placement of shots is often
more important than power at the net. Not to mention the trust that needs to be formed between the two teammates.
Practice resumes at the end of May when the Bearcats will return to campus to prepare for their foreign trip to Europe as they look to build for a conference championship and getting back to the NCAA Tournament.
