CINCINNATI - Diverse: Issues in Higher Education has announced its recipients of the 2018 Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar Awards with 21 student-athletes at the University of Cincinnati being recognized this year including six that were selected to first team honorees in their respective sports.
The Awards were created to honor undergraduate student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom as well as in athletic competition. According to the Diverse web site, the awards were "inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership."
This year, Bearcats honorees spanned 11 teams with 15 women and six men being recognized. Earning Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sports Scholar Award First Team honors included Grant Coleman (football), Daniela Murcia (women's golf), Jayde Sains (lacrosse), Natalie Obando (women's swimming & diving), Justin Tulloch (men's track & field) and Jordan Thompson (volleyball). Overall, women's track & field collected the most honors as the Bearcats placed six women on the lists, including Irati Mitxelena (second team), Bryana Robinson (third team), Angelica Lightfoot (fourth team), Kellsa Mbah (fourth team), Haisha Bisiolu (honorable mention) and Sylvana Ross (honorable mention). Football (three), women's basketball (two), women's swimming & diving (two) and volleyball (two) joined women's track & field as the programs that had multiple honorees.
