CINCINNATI – Major League Soccer is coming to Nippert Stadium in 2019.
Local soccer club Futbol Club Cincinnati, who has played its home games at the University of Cincinnati's facilities since its inception in 2016, was extended an invitation to join MLS Tuesday during an event at Rhinegeist Brewery in Over-The-Rhine.
"What a great day for the City of Cincinnati," UC Director of Athletics Mike Bohn said. "We've been proud to be a founding partner with FC Cincinnati from day one and we share in the excitement of seeing MLS in Nippert Stadium. It's another terrific example of a Cincinnati start up showing the nation what a wonderful sporting community we live in. Congratulations to Carl Lindner and the ownership group along with Jeff Berding and his staff for executing their shared vision of bringing MLS to Cincinnati."
FCC will play in Nippert Stadium until its soccer stadium in Cincinnati's West End is completed in 2021.
The Bearcats and FCC have partnered on several Nippert Stadium projects, including widening the playing surface, installation of a new videoboard and sound system and a turf replacement project.
FCC has enjoyed tremendous fan support over the past three season, shattering United Soccer League attendance records. Between the two organizations, nearly 775,000 fans came through the stadium gates in 2017.
"It's great news for FCC and the city of Cincinnati," UC Men's Soccer Head Coach Hylton Dayes said. "The ownership group has done a great job building the club and the fan base. We are excited for the future in the MLS and what it means for soccer in this region."
"FC Cincinnati is an incredible story and it's only just the beginning," UC Women's Soccer Coach Neil Stafford said. "In just a few short years, FCC has become one of the most talked about and revered soccer organizations in the country. They've built an unbelievable product in the community and you can see how the public feels with all the attendance records that have been set. I always say, 'it takes a village' and with FCC, that's no different. Jeff Berding and his entire crew have been professional from the word go. Operations, Sales, Marketing, and Community Outreach to the product they've put on the field with Alan (Koch) and the players is first class."
