University of Cincinnati senior shortstop Manny Rodriguez was selected in the tenth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft by the New York Mets Tuesday evening, the 290th overall pick in this year's draft.
The four-year starter for the Bearcats and Brooklyn, N.Y. native posted his best numbers this spring, hitting .296 with 15 doubles, three triples, 12 homeruns, 38 RBI and a .598 slugging percentage, all career-highs. Always known for his outstanding defensive abilities, Rodriguez became a threat at the plate as he reached base in every single game of 2018 and the final two of 2017 to end his career with a streak of 51 games. Rodriguez landed a spot on the American Athletic Conference First Team for his impressive performance this past season.
Rodriguez is UC's highest draft pick since 2015 AAC Player of the Year and current Chicago Cubs player Ian Happ was selected in the first round. He becomes the 13th Bearcats player to be drafted in the top ten rounds. Rodriguez is just the second UC player all-time to be selected by the Mets. Catcher John Meyer was drafted in the 36th round of the 1966 draft by New York.
Rounds 11-40 of the MLB Draft will take place on Wednesday, the final day.
