EUGENE, Ore. - Despite several down pores, hail and cool temperatures, Loretta Blaut fought to the finish as the University of Cincinnati senior closed out her 2018 track & field season in a tie for second place in the women's high jump at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships Saturday afternoon in Eugene, Ore. Blaut, the national runner-up indoors earlier this season, finished tied for the same honor today after three women finished with a clearance of 1.82m (5-11.50) and misses determining the overall champion.

Blaut entered the meet at the opening bar of 1.73m (5-08.00) and cleared on her first attempt before duplicating that feat at the next height of 1.78m (5-10.00). Tied for the overall lead through two bars, Blaut returned to the high jump apron following the first downpour of the afternoon and cleared 1.82m (5-11.50) on her third attempt, keeping her hopes for the national title alive. With the bar raised to 1.85m (6-00.75), Blaut took three attempts at the height and nearly cleared on her second, but the bar fell. With all three women at the height missing all three of their attempts, misses were needed to determine the champion, which was Alexus Henry of Texas-Arlington, who cleared 1.82m on her second attempt while Blaut and Erinn Beattie of UC Davis both cleared on their third attempts, placing them in a tie for second place.

// HONOR EARNED
With her Top 8 finish in the event, Blaut earned the distinction of being named a 2018 USTFCCCA All-America First Team selection for the second time this year. For her career, Blaut's honor earned today stands as the fifth of her career, making her the most decorated woman in program history, breaking a tie she previously held with Annette Echikunwoke and Erika Hurd. Blaut's five honors include four first-team and one second-team accolade with her four first-team honors standing tying her with Echikunwoke for the most in program history while her three outdoor accolades are the most for the Bearcats women.

// ON DECK
Several members of the program, including current, former and future Bearcats, will be competing in the coming weeks as the national championship events will get underway in the coming weeks, including the USATF Senior Championships, USATF Junior Championships and the New Balance High School Nationals.
