CINCINNATI - With the 2018 collegiate season complete, several members of the University of Cincinnati track & field program will be back in action in the coming weeks as several national competitions will be held across the nation, starting this weekend with a pair of events. This weekend, the 2018 USATF Junior Championships will be held in Bloomington, Ind., while the 2018 New Balance Nationals will take place in Greensboro, N.C., at the same time. Next week, the USATF Senior Championships will be held in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sam Mikula, who recently completed her freshman campaign with the cross country and track teams, will venture to Bloomington where she will race in the 3,000m final. The event, the last on the schedule Sunday, will start at 4:45 p.m. By competing in the meet, Mikula will be eligible to represent Team USA at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland, but will need to run a huge PR as she will need to meet the world qualifying standard of 9:35.
In North Carolina, four incoming Bearcats are set to compete one final time in the high school ranks with two runners and two throwers ready to battle for national titles and All-America honors. In the field, both Kaylia Black and Malin Smith will compete in the same events as both women will first battle in the shot put championship division at 11 a.m. Saturday before coming back Sunday to take part in the discus championship competition at 1 p.m. On the track, Leah Maschino will race twice, first in Saturday's 4x800m relay championship (7:30 p.m.) before coming back Sunday to take part in the distance medley relay (5:20 p.m.). The final newcomer to compete will be the lone male with UC ties in Jase Headings, who will race in the emerging elite sections of the 800m run at 11:35 a.m. Sunday.
Next week, a pair of Bearcats will take to the Blue Oval at Drake University with Alex Bloom and Loretta Blaut ready to compete. Bloom, a 2018 USTFCCCA indoor All-American in the heptathlon, will be up first as he will take part in the decathlon. The 10-event, two-day competition gets underway Thursday, June 21, at 1 p.m. with the 100m dash and continues Friday, June 22, at 11:30 a.m. with the 110m hurdles. On Saturday, June 23, Blaut, who twice was the NCAA runner-up this year (indoor and outdoor), will take part in the women's high jump with the event slated to start at 2:30 p.m.
Several other Bearcats, both current and future, will be competing internationally later this summer, including in their respective national championships and European competitions. More details on those competitors will be released later this month once the qualification period has closed for those individuals.
