University of Cincinnati senior second baseman Kyle Mottice signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates to continue his playing career at the professional level.
Mottice had an outstanding senior campaign for the Bearcats. He led the team with a .335 batting average, 74 hits and 20 stolen bases. He hit 11 doubles, two triples and three homeruns while starting in all 56 of the team's games. Mottice was strong defensively, too, leading the team by fielding 51 double plays, which helped UC lead the nation in that category. He ended his career ranked in the top ten in the UC record book in at bats and sacrifice hits.
Mottice is the fifth Bearcats player to be given a chance to compete professionally. Manny Rodriguez was selected in the tenth round of the MLB Draft earlier this month while pitchers Cam Alldred and J.T. Perez were drafted in the 24th and 29th rounds, respectively. Connor McVey inked a free agent contract to enter the Milwaukee Brewers' organization. Two UC signees were also selected in the draft with both selecting to forgo college and enter the professional ranks.
