University of Cincinnati rising senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) opened play in the U.S. Amateur with a fast start Monday in Pebble Beach, California.

Squires shot a 2-under par 70 at Spyglass Hill Golf Course (Par 72, 6,960 yards) to tie seven other players for fourth place in the 312-player field. Squires, who started his round on the 10th hole, eagled No. 11 and birdied No. 13 to make the turn at 3-under. Bogies on No. 1 and No. 8 were offset by a birdie on No. 7 while Squires recorded par scores on 13 holes.

New Zeland's Daniel Hillier and Trevor Phillips of Inman, South Carolina, are tied for the lead at 4-under 68. Isaiah Salinda of South San Francisco, California, is third at 3-under 69.

Tuesday marks the final round of the two-day stroke play portion of the nation's top amateur tournament. Squires begins second-round action at Pebble Beach Golf Links at 5:09 p.m. ET.

The top 64 stroke-play finishers will advance to the five-day match play portion of the event that begins Wednesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

// QUOTING SQUIRES
On his opening-round play:
"My game plan today was to try and make as many pars as possible and let the birdies come to me. I got off to a hot start, I made eagle on my second hole of the day (11) and birdied my fourth hole of the day (13). So I kind of fed off that momentum early to keep me going, which is huge on a course like Spyglass where there are so many intricate spots.

"Heading into Tuesday, I'm going to try and make as many pars as I can while giving myself as many birdie opportunities. Pebble and Spyglass are playing tough so par is a great score out here right now."
