University of Cincinnati rising senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) has advanced to match play competition at the U.S. Amateur after tying for 10th place at 1-over par 142 Tuesday in the two-round stroke play event at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.

As one of the top 64 stroke-play finishers, Squires advances to the five-day match play portion of the U.S. Amateur that begins Wednesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links. FOX Sports 1 will televise Wednesday's round from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET. Live scoring is available at USGA.org.

Squires carded a second-round 1-over par 72 Tuesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links after firing a 2-under par 70 Monday at nearby Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

Like Monday's performance, Squires started strong Tuesday recording a trio of birdies while climbing to 3-under through eight holes on the front nine. After a bogie on the ninth hole, Squires then posted a double bogie on No. 10 and bogey on No. 11 to drop to 1-over. He settled down with par scores over the next four holes. He then offset a bogey on No. 16 with a birdie on No. 17 en route to finishing at 1-over.

New Zealand's Daniel Hillier (6-under 137) and Cole Hammer of Houston, Texas (6-under 137) tied for first place in the 312-player field of the stroke play event.

Squires participated in the 2017 U.S. Amateur in Los Angeles, California, but fell short of qualifying for match play competition after tying for 250th place at 15-over 155 during stroke play.

// QUOTING SQUIRES
"I got off to another great start having birdies on 3 of my first eight holes which is to be expected at Pebble. For the most part you can shoot 3 or 4 under on the front pretty routinely, but from 9 to the clubhouse you really have to make good decisions and have good execution," Squires said. "I kind of faltered a little bit going 4 over in a 3 hole stretch from 9 to 11. I made a nice par save on 12 which got me back on track.

"I'm very pleased with how I played the past two days but now I have to focus on match play and take care of business."
