TicketsUniversity of Cincinnati rising senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) won his U.S. Amateur match play opener 5 & 4 over Max Theodorakis of Danbury, Connecticut, on Wednesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.
The 14th-seed Squires jumped out to an early 2 up lead on the 51st-seed Theodorakis after two holes thanks a birdie on No. 1 and a Theodorakis bogey on No. 2. After Theodorakis won the third hole on a birdie, Squires claimed the fourth hole with an eagle.
After halving the fifth hole, the competitors traded holes 6 through 9. Squires then pulled away to a 5up lead, posting a trio of par scores to Theodorakis bogies on holes 11-13. Squires secured the victory when Theodorakis couldn't birdie the 14th hole.

"I had an early lead winning the first two holes, and then it was back and forth the rest of the front 9," Squires said. "From then on I just kept hitting the center of greens and making pars because if I'm making pars it would be hard for him to make birdies and comeback on that back 9. I didn't play great today but I managed my game well and took care of business."
