The University of Cincinnati men's golf team begins its 2018 fall season at the Rod Myers Invitational Sept. 8-9, at the Duke University Golf Club. The two-day, 54-hole tournament features a 13-team field, including six squads that participated in the NCAA tournament last season and three (No. 18 Duke, No. 22 North Carolina and No. 25 Florida State) ranked in the 2018-19 preseason Buschnell Golfweek Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Bearcats tee off Saturday, Sept. 8, beginning at 7:35 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
// ABOUT THE BEARCATS
The 2018-19 Bearcats' roster features only three upperclassmen in seniors Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) and Paul Huber (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic High School) and junior Jake Fox (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller High School). Squires, the 2017 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, advanced to quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur in Pebble Beach, California in August. He broke his own school record, posting a 71.91 stroke average with seven Top 20 finishes in 2017-18.
Fox earned four Top 25 finishes last season, tying for 10th place at the Firestone Invitational. Huber played in three tournaments, tying for 25th place at the Colleton River Collegiate.
Redshirt-sophomore Andy Mayhew owns the second-best stroke average at 74.35 among all returners from 2017-18. He finished third at the Colleton River Collegiate a year ago. Sophomore Nicolas Osterburg notched a trio of Top 25 results last season, tying for 13th place at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate.
// QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG MARTIN
On the start of the fall season:
"We had a number of guys play well during the summer and I'm excited to see how that translates into the start of our fall season.
"Obviously, Austin had a great summer but we also had nine other players that played well too. We played over 200 competitive rounds as a team this summer which is an incredible commitment by the players on our team to want to get better. All of the players have improved since last spring. That's what you want as a coach. When your kids go out and work hard over the summer to grow their games and go out and compete that's how you build a program.
"This week we have two guys (Mason Lenhart and Sam Jean) playing in their first collegiate tournament who I'm interested to see what they can do."
On how Austin Squires' strong play at the U.S. Amateur and leadership on the team benefits the program:
"Austin's success has been great for a lot of our guys to see that 'hey, it can be done here.' To have him as someone that a player can look at on a day-to-day basis, what a great thing. When you have that in a program it's irreplaceable."
On playing in the Rod Myers Invitational:
"Whenever you play in a new tournament, it brings extra excitement. This event has an excellent field that will give us a great barometer as to what we'll need to work on for the rest of the fall season."
