CLEVELAND – Looking for its first win of the season, University of Cincinnati men's soccer bounced back on Friday with a 2-0 shutout of the Cleveland State Vikings at Krenzler Field.

The Bearcats (1-2) got ahead of CSU (0-3) early with a goal by newcomer Moritz Schaller (Austria/Vienna University) in the 7th minute. After taking a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break, UC added an insurance goal early in the second half on a score by Daniel Oginni (Mississauga, Ontario/King's Christian Collegiate) during the 55th minute. Stout defense continued for UC throughout the contest as it came away with a badly-needed road victory.

The Red & Black's first goal of the season came off of a free kick from the near flag in which Schaller corralled the ball in the box and pushed it past the CSU goalkeeper for the score. The Bearcats nearly added additional goals late in the opening period when Elias Helbig (Denver, Colo./East/Creighton) fired a free kick from just outside the box that needed a diving stop from the keeper to be negated in the 31st minute. Minutes later, Sean Clarke (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) got out on the break and was 1v1 with the keeper, but his shot on goal was saved.

The Red & Black's insurance goal was a nice defense-to-offense transition as UC took the ball away and promptly pushed it up the field. The ball found Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) on the far side who placed a beautiful ball in the box for the streaking Oginni who two-touched and beat the keeper for goal No. 2 of the night for the Bearcats. The UC defense proceeded to be stingy over the duration of the match as it pitched its first shutout since Oct. 18, 2017.

The Bearcats were aggressive offensively with season highs of 13 shots, including eight on goal. In his first start of the season, Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) registered five saves. Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) totaled a team-best four shots.
