BATAVIA, Ohio – University of Cincinnati women's golf set a tournament and program record with a three-round score of 876 at the NKU Fall Classic at Elks Run Golf Club as it took home the team championship. Four Bearcats finished in the top five on the team leaderboard and earned All-Tournament honors.
After shooting rounds of 287 and 297 during Monday's first and second rounds to build a sizable lead against the field, UC fought to the finish during Tuesday's third and final round with a 292 – a 10-stroke advantage over second place. UC's first round set a new benchmark at the tournament with the previous best being 292 which the Bearcats matched in the final round.
Propelling the Red & Black to victory was the play of senior Anika Hitt (Mequon, Wis./Homestead), sophomore Vanessa Manrique (Bogotá, Colombia), and junior Alyssa Burritt (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) who each finished among the top five at the tournament and were named to the All-Tournament Team. Hitt and Manrique placed in a tie for second and Burritt alone in fifth. Competing individually, sophomore Angela Lopez (Bogotá, Colombia) also earned her way onto the All-Tourney Team in fourth place. Each golfer's three-round total matched or bested a previous record of 220 at the event – Hitt (215), Manrique (215), Lopez (218), Burritt (220).
After shooting a personal-best round of 68 Monday in the first round and a 76 in the second, Hitt got back on track Tuesday with an even-par 71 during the final round. The senior birdied two holes on the front nine and saved par on seven holes on the back.
Manrique -- who was pacing the field following Monday's personal low, two-round 140 -- shot a 75 on Tuesday with struggles on holes 15, 17, and 18. Despite the setback, the sophomore still finished in a career-best tie for 2nd place.
Following a personal record of 70 in the opening round and a 76 in the second, Burritt battled back to a 74 on Tuesday featuring five birdies. The junior lost a few strokes on hole No. 15, but still managed to finish among the top 5.
Lopez responded to a second-round 76 with a final round, personal record 69 to move from a tie for eighth after Monday to fourth place on Tuesday. The Colombian holed four birdies en route to the best three-round score of her career, 218.
A couple other notable scores from Tuesday were sophomore Amalia Shahzan (Kedah, Malaysia) going just 1-over-par (72) in the final round after back-to-back scores of 77 on Monday. Junior Daniela Murcia (Bogotá, Colombia) improved each round (78-77-76) of the tournament and sunk two birdies on the back nine on Tuesday.
The Bearcats are set to compete Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 17-18, at the ECU Pirate Collegiate Classic in Greenville, North Carolina. The tournament may be modified, though, due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Florence along the Carolina coast this weekend.
