CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati men's soccer fell, 3-1, to the visiting Western Michigan Broncos on Wednesday night at Gettler Stadium.

Redshirt junior Austin Smythe (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day/Radford) scored his first goal of the season in the loss – a strike in the 29th minute.

WMU's Kosti Moni scored a pair of goals on the night – the opening goal of the match in the seventh minute and an insurance score in the 31st minute. Ben Thornton added a score during the 21st minute.

In their first home match in nine days, the Bearcats got behind quickly when Moni gathered the ball in the box and squeezed it past goalkeeper Pearce Skinner (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) for the first goal of the night. UC then found itself in a 2-0 hole 20 minutes in when Ben Thornton converted a Cameron Sipple corner kick into a score.

Facing a sizable deficit, the Red & Black battled back with Smythe's screamer from the near side off of a pass ahead by redshirt junior Ryan Melink (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland). UC's momentum was quickly halted minutes later when it was whistled for a foul in the box during the 31st minute and Moni subsequently deposited a penalty kick to bring the score to 3-1.

The Bearcats regrouped during the halftime break and were on the attack offensively in the second half. Able to get something going in set pieces, UC just wasn't able to cash in with goals on multiple occasions.

UC appeared to pull within one score in the 59th minute when the Broncos keeper, who had come out to the edge of the 18, fell down in trying to gather the ball and senior Peyton Mowery (Troy, Ohio/Troy) chipped in the thought-to-be easy score. In fact, the Bearcats were whistled for a foul against the keeper which negated the goal.

The chances continued around the 70th minute with tries by sophomores Darryn Commissiong (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic) and Mads Tranberg (Copenhagen, Denmark), but nothing materialized.

WMU tried to keep possession late with the two-goal lead as the Red & Black was searching for any offensive conversion. Ultimately, second-half deficit proved insurmountable as UC dropped a 3-1 result.
The Bearcats outshot the Broncos 13-10 for the game – including eight in the second half -- and were even with four shots on goal. Melink led the way for UC with three shots, while Smythe, Commissiong, and junior Donovan Segree (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State College) each had two. The home team totaled six corner kicks. Skinner notched one save in the match. In total, six yellow cards were issued between both teams.
