CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati senior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle HS) carded a 4-under par 67 Friday to tie for 11th place after first-round action at the Louisville Cardinal Challenge in Simpsonville, Ky.
Six strokes behind tournament leader Alex Smalley (10-under 61) of Duke, Squires posted five birdies and 12 par scores with only one bogey Friday to lead all Bearcats.
Squires and sophomore teammate Nicolas Osterburg (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian HS) were two of 39 golfers in the 92-player field to finish the day below par at the UofL Golf Club (Par 71; 7,101 yards). Playing as an individual, unattached from the Bearcats' team score, Osterburg earned a 1-under 70 Friday. He carded four birdies, including three through his first six holes. Osterburg's last birdie, on his 17th hole of the day, led to his below-par score.
As a team, the Bearcats posted their best team score of the young fall season at 1-over 285 but rank 10th in the competitive 16-team field. Duke, listed No. 17 in the nation according to Golfstat rankings, leads the field after a strong 27-under 257 performance. Tournament host Louisville and No. 28 Wake Forest are tied for second at 16-under 268. No. 23 USF and Western Kentucky are tied for fourth at 7-under 277.
Other Bearcats' scorers were redshirt-freshman Mason Lenhart (Prospect, Ky./North Oldham HS), who is tied for 40th place at even par 70; freshman Sam Jean (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS), who is tied for 60th place at 2-over 73; and redshirt-sophomore Andy Mayhew (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood HS), who is tied for 71st place at 3-over 74.

"We didn't get off to a very good start and fought it all day. Our ball striking gave us some opportunities but we didn't putt well as a team. We're going to need to do a better job of converting our chances the next two days.
"Austin continues to be very strong for us. He birdied his final two holes after seven straight par scores. Mason birdied his last hole after five par scores as well, so we were able to finish on a positive note."
