LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Cincinnati women's golf continued the momentum from last week's victory at the NKU Fall Classic with a score of 614 over two rounds at the Morehead State Greenbrier Invitational at Greenbrier Invitational to hold a nine-stroke lead in first place.
Amid rainy and wet conditions all day, the Bearcats carded a first-place score of 310 during the opening round at the tournament. Now acclimated to the environment it was competing in, the Red & Black then put together a round of 304 in the second to separate from the pack.
Junior Alyssa Burritt (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) led the way for the UC scoring team with back-to-back rounds of 76, including two birdies and holding par on 24 holes -- to tie for fourth overall. Participating individually, freshman Lily Rinker (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) worked her way into a tie for fourth as well with consecutive best rounds of her young Bearcats career with a 77 in the first round and a 75 in the second.
Also as an individual, junior Daniela Murcia (Bogotá, Colombia) carded back-to-back rounds of 77 – featuring three birdies and 23 pars – to finish the day in eighth place.
The Bearcats' scoring team rounded out the top 11 with sophomore Amalia Shahzan (Kedah, Malaysia) in a tie for ninth with a two-round 155 and senior Anika Hitt (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) in a tie for 11th with a score of 156.
Sophomore Angela Lopez (Bogotá, Colombia) was in a tie for third place after shooting a 74 in the opening round, but shot an 83 in the second to fall to a tie for 16th. Conversely, senior Emma Wachtel (Rorschwihr, France/Jean Sturm Gymnasium) followed a first-round 92 with a second-round 77.
As a team, UC holed 16 birdies on the day and saved par on the vast majority of its holes despite the treacherous conditions.
The third and final round of the tournament will begin Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. ET. The Bearcats' scoring team will be paired with Austin Peay and UNC Asheville. View the tee sheets here.
// COACH CARL ON THE BEARCATS
On weather affecting play:
"Today was a great reminder to us about playing in less-than-ideal conditions. It's been a long time since we've been in rain for 36-straight holes. I think in the first round we were just not quite as prepared as we could have been. We allowed the environment to control our emotions. Going into the second round, we settled down, accepted the conditions, and started performing again."
On the team's overall performance:
"I was really proud of the entire team today. We saw a lot of good things out of all the players, including our individuals. It was a total team effort today and it will take another one tomorrow for us to bring home the victory."
On the mindset heading into Tuesday's final round:
"The girls are looking forward to getting a chance to go out and play again tomorrow and play with the intensity that it will take to win. I can say that this team fought to the finish today."
