MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – University of Cincinnati men's soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to the West Virginia Mountaineers on Tuesday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Facing the Mountaineers for the first time since 2011, UC (1-6) controlled pace early and went toe-to-toe with WVU (4-3). Though it wasn't able to get much going on the offensive end in the first half, the Red & Black's defense was stout, surrendering only one shot on goal which was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md./Sacred Heart).

Feeling good coming out of the halftime break, the Bearcats caught some bad luck early in the second half. In the 52nd minute, a Mountaineers corner kick was sent into the box where Lawrence skied to gather the ball in front of the net. Lawrence got an initial grip on the ball, but it got loose and a WVU player was right there to pitch it in for the first score of the night.

Despite the error, UC did not hang its head and was active in searching for the equalizer. Testing the home team's back line with their speed, the Bearcats tried to create a few opportunities. In the 69th minute, junior Daniel Oginni (Mississauga, Ontario/King's Christian Collegiate) fired a shot from inside the 18, far side, that the WVU keeper punched out leading to a UC corner kick. Nothing materialized with the corner, but the Red & Black's aggressiveness showed.

Moments later during the 71st minute, the Bearcats were dealt another blow when the Mountaineers played a ball into the box from the near side that was subsequently deposited into the far side of the net to bring the score to 2-0, WVU. Facing a multi-goal deficit, UC tried to get something going against a possession-focused Mountaineers squad late, but was unsuccessful. In the end, the Red & Black couldn't recover from the two second-period scores as it dropped a 2-0 decision.

Lawrence had a pair of saves on the night in his first game back since Aug. 27 against Eastern Illinois. On the offensive end, Oginni and junior Donovan Segree (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College/Daytona State College) each had a shot on goal.
