MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Cincinnati men's soccer fell, 1-0, to the Memphis Tigers Sunday night at Mike Rose Soccer Complex in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

UC (1-7, 0-1 AAC) was the better team for much of the match, but a goal by UM (5-2-2, 1-0 AAC) during the 45th minute proved to be the difference.

Fighting through wet and rainy conditions, the Red & Black was solid on the defensive end in the opening period. UC's offense was limited to just one shot on goal in the half, but the Bearcats seemed poised to go into halftime with some momentum. The home team dashed those hopes when it deposited a header into the back of the net with less than 30 seconds to go before the break to sever the tie.

Looking to even up the match, the Bearcats were much more aggressive on offense early in the second half. Newcomer Rex Epps (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork/Army West Point), in his first game as a Bearcat, made his presence felt at the top of the attack with three shots on goal. The Red & Black was able to create opportunities off of set pieces, but just wasn't able to cash in.

With time winding down, the Bearcats had a chance off of a Moritz Schaller (Austria/Vienna University) corner kick in the 88th minute, but Peyton Mowery's (Troy, Ohio/Troy) header attempt was kick-saved by the Tigers goalkeeper. Ultimately, one late-first-half lapse proved costly as UC dropped its AAC opener, 1-0.

For the game, UC had 11 shots, including five on goal. The Bearcats also totaled five corner kicks. Goalkeeper Noah Lawrence (Mitchellville, Md./Sacred Heart) was solid in goal with four saves.
